To evaluate a diagnostic significance of ultrasonograhy in appendicitis, we analysed 42 cases that were recieved ultrasonography and appendectomy at Wonkwang university hospital from August 1997 to July 1998. 18 were males and 24 females. Age incidence is most common in the second decade(21.4%). The positive findings in ultrasonography were in 34 cases and negative in 8 cases. Acute focal appendicitis were 8 cases, suppurative type 16 cases, gangrenous type 8 cases, and perforated type 5 cases(periappendiceal abscess 3 cases) in the histopathological diagnosis. The diagnostic accuracy was 83.3% with 86.5% of sensitivity and 60% of specificity, which was more increased than the result of previous report of our hospital in 1988(diagnostic accuracy 55.9%, sensitivity 51.3%, specificity 76.5%) probably secondary to a development of diagnostic instruments and technics.
